What we decline

The work Powell Welding Repair does not take on

  • Structural steelwork for buildings is not undertaken, since that work requires design sign-off and inspections we are not set up to provide.
  • On-site welding to pressure vessels and gas pipework is declined, as such joints must be certified by an engineer holding the relevant approval.
  • Because they carry serious risks and require specialist handling, vehicle fuel tanks and systems that have held petrol or diesel are not repaired.
  • Jewellery and fine ornamental work are turned away, because the scale of the metal and the finish required need a bench jeweller rather than a welding shop.

The workshop

A small welding shop built around repair work

Powell Welding Repair is the trading name of POWELL WELDING LTD, a workshop set up to do the kind of metalwork that keeps other things going. Much of what comes through the door is a broken part from a farm, a workshop or a vehicle: a cracked casting, a snapped bracket, a gate that no longer closes. The work is judged on whether the item goes back into service and stays there, not on how the weld looks in a photograph.

The same bench takes on new fabrication where an off-the-shelf item will not do. Frames, guards, stands, railings and one-off brackets are made to measurements taken on site, in mild steel, stainless or aluminium, and finished to suit where they will be used. If you have a sketch, a pattern or only the broken original, that is enough to begin.

Jobs are arranged plainly. You describe the problem, we give a view on whether repair is sensible or replacement is the better road, and a price is agreed before any work starts. Where the piece is too large or too fixed in place to move, the welding is carried out on site, with the same preparation and the same finish as in the workshop.

Most enquiries are answered within one working day. If something cannot be done here, you will be told so directly, and where the job belongs with another trade we will say that as well. That honesty matters more than a booking, because a repair that is beyond the shop's equipment or certification is a repair that will fail.
